Neurodiversity and Autism: Moving Towards Acceptance and Understanding in April & Beyond!

Apr 29, 2023

As World Autism Awareness Month draws to a close, it is important to recognize that there is still much to learn about autism spectrum disorder and how it affects individuals and families. While the month of April serves as a time to promote awareness and understanding, it is crucial that we continue to strive for acceptance and inclusion throughout the year.

Autism is a neurodevelopmental disorder that affects communication, social interaction, and behavior. It is estimated that 1 in 68 children in the United States are diagnosed with autism spectrum disorder (ASD). In recent years, there has been a shift in the way we talk about autism and the terminology used to describe individuals on the spectrum.

PERSON-FIRST LANGUAGE? JUST CALL ME AUTISTIC!

Traditionally, the term “autistic” was used to refer to individuals with autism. However, in the past decade, there has been a growing movement to use person-first language, such as “person with autism,” to acknowledge the person as an individual first and their autism as a secondary aspect of their identity. However, some within the autism community have criticized person-first language as disingenuous and prefer to be identified as “autistic” as they feel it is a core part of their identity and not something to be separated from themselves.

NEURODIVERSITY

Another shift in terminology has been towards “neurodiversity,” a concept that emphasizes the diversity of neurological differences and rejects the idea of “normal” or “abnormal” brain function. The neurodiversity movement posits that individuals with autism are not “broken” or in need of “fixing” but rather have a different way of experiencing the world that should be embraced and celebrated.

AWARENESS VS ACCEPTANCE

This movement towards neurodiversity and acceptance of autism has sparked debates about autism awareness versus autism acceptance. Autism awareness campaigns often focus on raising awareness of the challenges and struggles individuals with autism face, such as difficulties with communication and social interaction. However, some argue that these campaigns can perpetuate harmful stereotypes and portray individuals with autism as “less than” or in need of pity or charity.

On the other hand, autism acceptance aims to create a society that embraces and celebrates neurodiversity and recognizes the unique strengths and talents of individuals with autism. This approach highlights the importance of creating inclusive communities and providing support and accommodations for individuals with autism to thrive.

YOU CAN EMBRACE NEURODIVERSITY

Moving towards a more accepting and understanding approach to autism is crucial for the well-being and success of individuals with autism. By embracing neurodiversity and recognizing the strengths and talents of individuals with autism, we can create a society that values and includes individuals of all abilities. This requires a shift in our thinking and language around autism, moving away from stigmatizing and pitying individuals with autism towards celebrating and accepting their differences.

As we continue to learn more about autism and the experiences of individuals on the spectrum, it is important that we remain open-minded and willing to adapt our understanding and terminology. By doing so, we can create a more inclusive and accepting world for all.

BEYOND AUTISM AWARENESS MONTH

We must remain committed to creating a world that embraces neurodiversity and celebrates the unique strengths and talents of individuals on the autism spectrum. This requires a collective effort to break down barriers and promote inclusion, providing support and accommodations that allow individuals with autism to thrive.

In conclusion, while World Autism Awareness Month may be coming to an end, our commitment to promoting awareness and acceptance of autism spectrum disorder should continue throughout the year. By working together, we can create a world that celebrates and supports individuals of all abilities, and ensure that everyone has the opportunity to reach their full potential.
