ALL About Gestalt Language Processing (GLP)
Jun 01, 2024Get ready to dive into the exciting world of Gestalt Language Processing and Language Development with our upcoming 3-Day Training!
Did you know gestalt language processing is not a diagnosis?
Gestalt language processing is not a program or intervention and it is not a diagnosis. It is a way of describing normal, natural language development. Both neurotypical and neurodivergent children can develop language this way and there are six stages of gestalt language development.
Gestalt language processors can be delayed in their language development just like analytic language processors.
This does not make their language development wrong or unnatural.
Some children will need support from a speech-language pathologist that is knowledgable about gestalt language development and Natural Language Acquisition to support them through the stages and others will go through the stages on their own.
The article discusses a major shift in research from deficit-focused medical models to neurodiversity-affirming frameworks that respects Autistic children’s natural development.
Since many autistic children are gestalt language processors, the authors argue that embracing gestalt language development is a fundamental neurodiversity-affirmative practice and propose four ways that they believe we can move towards embracing gestalt language development.

What do I do if I’m not sure whether a child is an analytic or gestalt language processor?
Below are language strategies that support all language development. If you’re not sure how a child is processing language yet, incorporate these strategies. Also, remember that the natural language modeling without expectation that we use with gestalt language processors will also support analytic language processors.
- Use child-led play therapy.
- Eliminate rewards and sensory breaks and instead incorporate sensory and special interests into therapy.
- Model language naturally without demands.
- For example, you want to avoid prompts like “say ____”
- Use music and singing songs in early language development
- Provide parent and caregiver coaching so that they can support the child outside of therapy.
- Consider robust AAC if the child can benefit.
- Honor all modes of communication.
